The Schied Family

Last Christmas I decided to make  "separating work from home" my new years resolution. It was something I so desperately needed to do, but anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely love interior design and I love my home (but especially workspace) to be pretty! I like to think a pretty workspace inspires me, and maybe it does, but ultimately I think that may just be an excuse to buy pretty things. So I started doing some research of how I was going to renovate one of our extra bedrooms into my office. I fell in love with the look of the white "Bedford" corner desk from Pottery Barn but didn't love the price tag so much. Although worth every penny, this particular desk was SO out of my budget so I started scanning my local Craigslist in search of a used one. To my surprise, The Schied Family had just the one I was looking for! They helped me stay in budget with the funds I had set aside for my dream desk and graciously accepted the rest of the payment with a Stevie Dee Photography gift certificate! Turns out they were also in desperate need of updated family photos! So...that is how I met this sweet family! Crazy small world, huh?

We made the trek to Owl Creek, a quaint farm located on the outskirts of Temecula Wine Country. I absolutely adore this venue and think it made the perfect scenery for their natural, rustic style!

I feel so fortunate to have met this family and feel blessed to have the opportunity to create memories that will be a part of their family forever.

It's not everyday we have a toddler who loves working with the camera. This not-so-shy two year old Presley, and her teddy bear Rupert, enjoyed every minute of her birthday photo session! In the heart of Temecula, a secluded and private estate nestled near wine country, provides a picturesque glimpse into the old English Country.

We met the Hecht Family out in Old Town Temecula a few weekends ago and had a blast with these guys! This was my first time doing a morning session in Old Town and I forgot how crazy this little town can be. The Farmers Market was in full swing with vendors and booths set up everywhere, meanwhile an outdoor event was happening at the Theater (usually my go to spot!)

I always like to meet my clients at the Old Town Theater because it's a landmark everyone knows and is easy to find. Because of the event going on at the theater my favorite spots were not available. I think most photographers would be freaking out on the inside if they were in my shoes but I actually like when this happens. It forces me to get really creative and use new areas I may not have used otherwise.

Lisa mentioned that she wanted an urban/industrial look to her photos so after we took one set of photos on the side of the theater I went around the back to find an open area with no vendors...and I think I found the jackpot!

Thank you Lisa, Sean, Landon and Brooklyn for an awesome shoot, you guys rocked it! Can't wait to photograph your family again sometime soon!

Miranda + Taylor {MARRIED} 8.13.15 | Temecula, Ca Wedding Photographer | Stevie Dee Photography

Miranda + Taylor

Miranda + Taylor said "I do!" during an intimate ceremony at Hearts Home Farms in Hemet, Ca. We absolutely loved the pops of mint and coral and the bridesmaids dresses were so unique and gorgeous!

We caught a glimpse of the bride right before she walked down the aisle with her brother Forrest. I just love Miranda's face in these photos, you can see the pure joy and excitement. And of course, the grooms face as he sees his bride for the first time. Ugh...makes us tear up every. single. time.

I think this is one of the BEST first kisses we've seen. The Bride + Groom's oldest son Logan wanted to make sure he was right up there mom and dad for their first kiss. So sweet.

The wedding party piled into a stretch Cadillac limo and headed to the reception at RJ's Sizzling Steer where they enjoyed a mellow BBQ dinner and cake!

Congratulations Mr. + Mrs. Pillow! Thank you for sharing your day with us, we were honored to be a part of it! Cheers to a lifetime of love and happiness!

 Isla Avery | March 28, 2015 | 1:27 PM | 6 Pounds 8 Ounces & 18 Inches

temeculanewbornphotographer-6When we arrived at the McCarthy's new home we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of natural light filtering through their windows, truly a photographers dream! We set up a small work space in their living room and nursery and captured some of the sweetest images of this new family.

Complete with pink striped walls, white distressed furniture and incredible detail, this Alice in Wonderland nursery by far is one of the best I've ever seen! We may or may not be just a little bit jealous...

temeculanewbornphotographer-4temeculanewbornphotographer-5temeculanewbornphotographer-7temeculanewbornphotographer-2temeculanewbornphotographer-8temeculanewbornphotographer-9Isla was such a sweet girl and definitely has some of her own personality already. She preferred to stretch her arms and legs out of the wraps and the sound of mom washing dishes in the kitchen sink over my acoustic lullaby soundtrack. The "kitchen sink" white noise was definitely a first for me!

Richard and Jessica, thank you for letting me into your home, your family and your hearts! It truly is a blessing to capture these precious moments in time for you to enjoy forever. Wishing you all the best in your new journey together as a family and am looking forward to working with you again in the future!

With Love,

Shooting My Passion | Amanda- Studio 31 Dance | Temecula, Ca

I think most of you know by now my passion for photography, but what most don't know is my passion for dance! I started dancing as a Tiny Tot a local dance studio at the young age of 2 years old. Growing up I was involved in many other sports including T ball, soccer, golf and beauty pageants but nothing ever compared to the adrenaline rush of performing on stage. I no longer compete or perform on stage but dance is still a big part of my life. These days I am thrilled to hold title of "Miss Stevie"- a teacher at Studio 31 Dance in Murrieta, Ca. This is where I met this talented young lady, Amanda. She is a student and an assistant teacher for the Tiny Tot classes.

We went to Old Town Temecula and had so much fun!  Here are just some of our favorites from her session!

We had a blast with Boomer and his mom during his Senior session a few weekends ago, which he rocked by the way! They live right next to this awesome park so we decided to shoot his session there. It was pretty cool (probably my new fave)  plus I had never been there before and I'm always looking for new places to shoot! Here are just a FEW of our favorites from his session...

Nautical Newborn Session | {Styled} Newborn Session with Stevie Dee Photography | Temecula, Ca Newborn Photographer

KENSINGTON-1 My friends at Touched by Time Vintage Rentals put together this gorgeous styled scene for Miss Kensington and we loved every minute of it! When mom and baby arrived on set, Kensie was so excited for her session she didn't want to nap. It took hours of rocking, swaddling and feeding to get her to fall asleep but once we did, she was OUT and she rocked her session! She even let us her dress up as mermaid and  pose her in a boat.... (sigh) the life of a baby!

Congratulations Correra and Ryan on your beautiful baby girl Kensington! She is gorgeous and I can't wait to work with you again!

Why You Shouldn't Be Afraid To Shoot Mid Day| Tips and Tricks For Photographers | Stevie Dee Photography

Tips & Tricks For The Natural Light Photographer While Shooting Mid Day

There's nothing quite like the mellow golden sun casting the most beautiful light (and the occasional sun flare, am I right?!) on the horizon right before sunset during a photo session. This I cannot argue with. The thing is, we don't always have the luxury of choosing the time of our sessions.. If it were a perfect world I would schedule every photo session during "golden hour" (ie. the amazing light described above that comes typically 1 hour after sunrise and 1 hour before sunset) no doubt! But THAT is seriously unrealistic. I know, I know, some of you may be rolling your eyes  or thinking I'm crazy but truth is we are in the business of serving our client, even if that means shooting mid afternoon in the brightest and harshest light.

I've heard photographers talk about how they ONLY shoot during golden hour and all I can think about is WHY???? Believe me, I totally get that shooting mid day is not ideal but it is not impossible. I am going to share some of my tips and tricks that will hopefully help you natural light photogs get out of the golden hour comfort zone and explore other beautiful light!

This is a gorgeous family session I shot at 12:00 PM in a woodsy park near my house.

First and foremost PICK A LOCATION WITH LOTS OF SHADE! I cannot stress this one enough. I have several locations I actually prefer to shoot mid day because the light is prettiest at that time for the area. For example, a wooded park. The trees create ample shade but still let a lot of light through the trees.

KNOW THE LIGHT. Always have your subjects stand in the shade with their backs turned toward the sun.

BRING A REFLECTOR. My reflector comes with 5 different sides so I bring it along and use the black side as a shade. I have my assistant or second shooter hold the reflector above the subjects' head to shade their entire face/body. Then I expose for the shadows on the face.

BE CONFIDENT with your skills. Watch your exposure grid and always always always expose for their faces. When people look at an image their eye immediately goes to the focal point, which is most times the subjects' face. By setting your exposure for their face the focal point of the image will be exposed properly while other parts of the image may be blown out.  *Be careful not to shoot too bright though, once a part of an image becomes blown out all the data is erased and your computer won't know what is there. No amount of editing can save a blown out image.

SPENCER-3 SPENCER-14 SPENCER-32You can see in a lot of these images that are parts of the image that are blown out. The important thing is to make sure the subject and focal point of your image is exposed the way you like it. I like to overexpose my images a little bit, I like the light airy feeling it gives but these same tips will apply even if you like shooting on the dark side.

I've heard other photographers say "Couldn't you just dodge and burn the areas to make them lighter/darker?" The answer: YES! You absolutely could. I prefer not to because number 1: That takes wayyyyyy too much in my post production workflow and number 2: Dodging and burning in todays digital age makes the image look flat, in my opinion. So I prefer to shoot it the way I want in camera and then make minor adjustments in post.

And my final tip to all you savvy natural light photographers; remember WE ARE NOT MIRACLE WORKERS. Being an outdoor natural light photographer puts you at the mercy of mother nature so you have to be ready, and confident, to take on anything that is thrown at you.
